Life in Shanghai: New Year, New Goals

Happy New Year everyone! What a whirlwind 2016 turned out to be! As I look back on this last year, I can’t help but feel amazed by how far I’ve come since the year before.

2015 was a year of wake up calls and bumpy roads, as I realized that the expectations I had of life abroad weren’t exactly realistic. I experienced many moments of disappointment and frustration. Inevitably, I grew as I learned to readjust my thinking and appreciate the experience for what it was, instead of what I wanted it to be.

With this lesson, I entered 2016 hopeful and ready to step into the next chapter of life. I returned home at the beginning of the year and spent a few weeks enjoying time with family and recharging. By the time I came back in March, I was refreshed and ready to take on China once more. I completed my TEFL/TESOL certification course, finished my first teaching contract, accepted a new job in Shanghai and moved to the city, stood by one of my dearest friends as she married her best friend, and met my baby nephew. Along the way, I’ve made some incredible friends who’ve made life in China an unforgettable experience.

As satisfying as 2016 turned out to be, I am now looking forward to the upcoming year. For 2017, I intend to travel more and to really focus on my blog. This year will ultimately be a huge milestone for me as I turn the big 25 in 3 weeks! I’ll be celebrating in style with my first trip to Vietnam at the end of January. Other tentative travel plans include Tibet, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, and maybe Japan.

Feel free to follow me as I begin to earnestly transform this blog through regular updates on life as an expat in Shanghai and on my other travels in Asia. I have a feeling this year is going to be big!
